the underground
What is the underground?
The underground is an umbrella term referring to live performances played under the ground from drains to caves, formed from restrictions to where live music can be performed due to economic situations forcing venues to close. Molded from the term underground music (meaning unheard) now becoming its own term to describe the scene. The underground scene is a merge of all alternative scenes congregating to listen to music that pushes the norms of conventional music. seeking to encompass elements of punk, grunge, goth, emo, and more the underground is used as a gateway to bring all alternative scenes together.
Good adequate of the scene, all are welcome, no one is of authoritarian rule but of respectful nature. a place of individuality expression and freedom of judgment and control. a place of art, the underground should be colored from wall to ceiling with art as above shuns expression below welcomes. the land at which the underground is healed must be respected and kept clean.
WHAT WE DO!
ABOUT US
Emerging from the concrete depths of Brisbane/Meanjin, glycol is a band that thrives on angst and musical disparity. This trio driven by fire-fueled grunge power and sweet disorder, has carved out a unique niche in the music scene. Founded in 2023 Glycol is composed of three distinct talents: Evan, a jazz-trained drummer whose rhythmic prowess lays the foundation; Luca, the head-banging groover whose bass lines are the heartbeat of their sound; and Carlton, the sweet and sour diehard who leads with his raw vocals and gritty guitar riffs.
Glycol’s sound is best described as emotional hard hitting music and a diversity that encompasses all minds. Its a fluent sound that is ever evolving taking major inspiration from all uprising scenes throughout history, reflecting the varied influences and backgrounds of its members. Their sound is a rebellion against the polished and the predictable, a middle finger to conventionality that they reinforce by hosting underground shows in the most unconventional of places. From abandoned warehouses and city car parks to drain-ways and beneath the ICB bridge, Glycol’s performances are as raw and unrestrained as their music. Despite keeping the performance locations secret until the final day of the show their fans are dedicated pulling crowds in the hundreds. Glycol’s fans referred to as Glycolians have been forming a cult like following in the underground scene. Using moto’s like, “Glycolians are volatile by nature so come be volatile with us” to encompass the energy of their fans at these underground gigs.
Their debut album, featuring 10 punch-heavy tracks, is a testament to their dedication to the grunge ethos. Produced and engineered by Steve Summers, also known as STØNEWÅX, this album is an offering that promises to make Kurt Cobain rock in his grungy grave. It's a bold declaration of their arrival on the music scene. Glycol is not just a band; it's a movement of raw energy and defiant spirit, bringing a new edge to Brisbane's underground music culture.
